Hyderabad to Install Facial Recognition Cameras at Secunderabad Station

The Secunderabad railway station, one of India’s largest, is set to implement a cutting-edge facial recognition system. This initiative is part of a broader national effort by the Indian Railways to enhance safety and security across seven major stations. The new AI-powered surveillance will create a comprehensive database of known offenders, including those with records of theft, narcotics, and trafficking, allowing the system to automatically flag their presence on the station premises. This proactive measure aims to significantly reduce crime, creating a safer and more secure environment for millions of passengers who rely on the railway network for their daily commute and travel.

The system will leverage existing CCTV cameras and integrate them with facial recognition technology, enabling real-time monitoring of all entry and exit points. When a known offender enters the station, an instant alarm will be triggered in the control room, alerting the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP). This advanced system will provide security personnel with immediate, actionable intelligence, allowing them to track the person’s movements and take swift action. Funded by the Nirbhaya funds, this project, with a budget of approximately ₹4.5 crore for the Secunderabad station alone, is a testament to the commitment to passenger safety, particularly for women and other vulnerable groups.

The implementation of this technology is a strategic response to the persistent issue of crime within the railway jurisdiction. Over the past 18 months, the South Central Railway (SCR) alone has documented around 600 theft cases, including incidents of pickpocketing, luggage theft, and chain snatching. The new system is specifically designed to focus on these types of crimes, creating a strong deterrent for habitual offenders. The digital database will include a wealth of information, such as physical descriptions, past criminal records, and patterns of offences, transforming how security forces respond to and prevent crime on railway premises. This move towards data-driven and AI-assisted security is a critical step in modernising India’s railway infrastructure and enhancing public safety.

The rollout of this facial recognition system at Secunderabad, alongside other major stations like Mumbai, New Delhi, and Chennai, is a significant leap towards creating smarter, safer, and more equitable cities. While concerns about data privacy and surveillance are part of the larger conversation, the primary objective of this initiative is to serve the greater public interest by ensuring a secure travel experience for all. By leveraging technology to proactively identify and track criminals, the Indian Railways is setting a new standard for public transport safety.
