Indian Railways has initiated construction of a fourth railway line spanning from Itarsi through Bhopal to Bina in Madhya Pradesh. The project is expected to significantly streamline train movement, ease chronic congestion on existing corridors, and bolster both passenger and freight operations across central India.
Traffic along the current triple-track route frequently leads to delays and capacity constraints. Officials managing the expansion project highlight that a fourth line will improve punctuality and operational resilience—especially vital on a corridor that handles immense daily volumes. Surveying for the proposed alignment is already underway for both the Itarsi–Bhopal and Bhopal–Bina sections. Following completion of the technical groundwork, land acquisition will commence in coordination with district administrations. Affected landowners will receive compensation in line with established statutory norms, officials assured.
The new line will run across districts including Narmadapuram, Raisen, Sehore, Bhopal, Vidisha, and Sagar. Experts from Indian Railways believe that this corridor expansion will catalyse industrial development and strengthen logistics networks, providing economies-of-scale benefits that reduce transit time and freight costs. Railway planners emphasise that the fourth track will create much-needed redundancy, enabling smoother scheduling and reduced dependence on current infrastructure.
