In a strong push towards integrated and sustainable infrastructure development, India’s ambitious PM GatiShakti National Master Plan has cleared 293 high-impact infrastructure projects worth a staggering ₹13.59 lakh crore. Evaluated by the institutionalised Network Planning Group (NPG), these projects reflect the accelerating pace at which India is converging planning, execution, and digital intelligence for nation-wide infrastructure modernisation.
Launched in October 2021, the GatiShakti Master Plan aims to transform the fragmented planning ecosystem into a unified and digitally mapped platform, enabling data-backed decision-making and cross-sectoral coordination. The backbone of this programme lies in the NPG’s ability to vet infrastructure proposals through a multi-modal, multi-agency lens bringing in coherence across transport, energy, logistics, urban development, and environmental goals.According to an official update submitted to Parliament, the projects under evaluation span crucial sectors such as roadways, railways, ports, energy corridors, and city infrastructure. The strategic objective is to ensure last-mile connectivity, minimise duplication of efforts, reduce ecological disruption, and optimise cost and timelines through integrated planning.

One of the standout features of the GatiShakti platform is its unparalleled reliance on digital geospatial intelligence. Over 1,700 data layers have already been integrated into the system 969 contributed by States and Union Territories, and 731 by Central Ministries and Departments. This dense mapping framework enables hyper-local infrastructure planning, which in turn supports inclusive and resilient city-building.The initiative has witnessed enthusiastic participation from across the federal structure, with 57 Central Ministries and Departments and all 36 States and Union Territories now active stakeholders. This collaborative model promotes not only greater transparency but also faster project approvals and better alignment with national development goals like Make in India, Smart Cities, and Net-Zero Emission targets.
Although the GatiShakti programme itself does not carry a dedicated budget, the central government has provisioned financial support through allied schemes. In the financial year 2022–23, ₹5,000 crore was earmarked under a special assistance programme for States to drive capital investment aligned with GatiShakti’s objectives.Officials familiar with the policy architecture note that the onboarding of additional ministries especially in the social sector, education, and digital services marks a major shift towards holistic infrastructure thinking. This whole-of-government approach is critical in a country like India where urban-rural imbalances, climate vulnerabilities, and rapid population growth demand integrated planning.
By aligning ministries, States, and data under one national grid, the PM GatiShakti Master Plan is emerging as a critical lever in building India’s next-generation infrastructure. If executed efficiently, it has the potential to not only improve logistics efficiency and reduce emissions but also create a foundation for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.The scale of the vision is clear but its success will rely on execution discipline, real-time data use, and the continuous participation of all tiers of government.
