India’s aviation sector is preparing for a transformative leap as construction begins on a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru. Spread over 31 acres, the facility is expected to be one of India’s largest aircraft maintenance centres by 2028, reflecting a strategic push to localise aviation services and reduce dependency on global MRO networks.
The upcoming MRO centre, spearheaded by one of India’s largest low-cost carriers, is designyed to handle up to 12 aircraft simultaneously. It will service both narrow-body and wide-bod fleets, helping maintain a growing aviation inventory that now exceeds 400 aircraft. The project, launched in collaboration with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), represents a major milestone in India’s journey toward a self-sustaining aviation economy.
Aviation experts view this development as a response to both commercial pressures and policy signals encouraging localisation of aircraft servicing operations. With rising fuel costs, global supply chain volatility, and increased air traffic, airlines are prioritising operational efficiency through domestic solutions. The MRO facility is also expected to significantly reduce aircraft downtime and improve turnaround cycles. Strategically located in Bengaluru, a city that has long been India’s aerospace nerve centre, the hub reinforces Karnataka’s growing role in the national aviation and defence sectors. The project is anticipated to generate over 1,000 jobs across engineering, technical services, logistics, and operational support, strengthening the employment base in high-skilled, future-ready sectors.
Officials involved in the project confirmed that the groundwork began within two months of signing the land agreement in May 2025. The rapid timeline underlines the urgency and commitment to transform KIA into a full-fledged aviation service hub. The facility will supplement existing MRO capacities in Delhi and Bengaluru, effectively tripling the airline’s service bandwidth. From a sustainability standpoint, the centralisation of services will reduce the carbon footprint of flying aircraft abroad for routine maintenance, aligning with broader goals of reducing emissions within the aviation sector.
In addition to commercial advantages, the MRO hub could contribute to India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, offering the capability to attract international carriers for third-party maintenance in the future. The expansion also coincides with Bengaluru’s ongoing push to integrate smart and green infrastructure into its airport ecosystem. Officials noted that the MRO will follow sustainable construction practices and include provisions for energy-efficient technologies, waste management systems, and rainwater harvesting. As India moves to become a global aviation player, Bengaluru’s role as a gateway city is being redefined, not just as a point of departure, but as a cornerstone of the country’s future-ready infrastructure.
