Delhi Airport Restricts Non Scheduled Flights On Independence Day Hours

New Delhi: In a significant security measure ahead of Independence Day celebrations, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will temporarily halt all non-scheduled flight movements on 15 August during designated hours. Officials confirmed that the restrictions will apply from 6 am to 10 am and again from 4 pm to 7 pm, aligning with heightened security protocols in the national capital.

The directive, issued through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) by the Airports Authority of India’s Aeronautical Information Services, underscores the country’s strict airspace safety measures during national events. While this pause affects private charter services, non-scheduled flights of commercial airlines, and other unscheduled operations, the movement of scheduled passenger flights will remain unaffected.Officials clarified that certain critical operations are exempt. Aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force, Border Security Force, and Army aviation, along with state-owned planes and helicopters carrying governors or chief ministers, will continue to operate within these hours. Emergency missions such as rapid-response deployments, casualty evacuations, and urgent medical transfers will also have clearance to fly.

The decision reflects the layered security arrangements typically seen around the Red Fort and other sensitive locations during Independence Day. Airspace restrictions over Delhi are a standard protocol to mitigate risks from aerial threats and to maintain streamlined air traffic management during ceremonial fly-pasts and public gatherings. The Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of Asia’s busiest aviation hubs, handles an average of 1,300 aircraft movements each day. Officials emphasise that keeping the airport’s commercial traffic unaffected ensures minimal disruption for the travelling public while maintaining security priorities.

Aviation analysts note that such NOTAMs are part of a well-practised national security architecture, often implemented in tandem with traffic advisories, road restrictions, and metro service adjustments. The impact is felt most sharply in the business aviation and private charter segments, where operators must reschedule services or route through alternate airports in neighbouring states. While environmental and airspace safety advocates support such measures for security reasons, they also call for better coordination to minimise fuel wastage from holding patterns and diversions. Experts suggest that long-term planning, including the use of sustainable aviation fuels and low-emission aircraft in charter services, could balance security imperatives with climate commitments, especially in a city battling air pollution.

The August 15 restrictions are a reminder of the complex interplay between national security, passenger convenience, and sustainable aviation management. As the capital prepares for its ceremonial and symbolic events, the skies above will remain tightly monitored a silent but crucial part of Independence Day
