Mumbai Central Railway Operates 193 Mail And Express Trains Daily In July

Mumbai’s Central Railway division has reported a significant increase in Mail and Express train operations in July 2025, reflecting ongoing efforts to meet rising commuter demand. The division operated an average of 193 trains daily, up from 185 per day during the same period last year. A total of 5,983 trains ran in July, including 213 special services, marking a 7 per cent overall increase and a notable 35 per cent rise in special train services compared to July 2024.

Officials highlighted that the uptick in train operations coincides with improvements in punctuality. Between April and July 2025, Mail and Express services achieved 57 per cent punctuality, up from 51 per cent year-on-year. Suburban train punctuality also edged higher, reaching 93 per cent compared to 92 per cent during the corresponding period in 2024. For July alone, punctuality of Mail and Express services rose to 56 per cent, while suburban trains recorded 92 per cent, demonstrating operational resilience even during the challenging monsoon season. To address anticipated travel surges during Ganesh Chaturthi, Central Railway has announced 44 additional special services, bringing the total Ganpati Special trains to 296. Among these, eight bi-weekly services will run between Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Sawantwadi Road, covering key stations along the Konkan belt such as Thane, Panvel, Roha, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, and Sindhudurg. Coaches will include AC 3-tier, sleeper class, and general second-class compartments to cater to diverse passenger segments.

In addition, 36 unreserved MEMU services will operate daily between Diva and Khed from August 22 to September 9, while the Diva–Chiplun MEMU service will increase from 38 to 40 trips. Officials explained that these measures are designed to balance passenger convenience with operational efficiency, particularly on high-density routes during peak festival travel. Railway experts emphasised that expanding services while improving punctuality requires meticulous scheduling, advanced monitoring, and efficient resource allocation. By integrating technology and optimising operational workflows, Central Railway aims to enhance commuter satisfaction and maintain reliability across both long-distance and suburban networks. Officials also noted that such initiatives are part of a broader commitment to sustainable transport infrastructure. By increasing train frequency and reducing congestion on suburban routes, these measures support environmentally friendly urban mobility, minimise commuter dependency on private vehicles, and contribute to reduced carbon emissions.

With continued investment in special services, operational efficiency, and commuter-focused strategies, Central Railway’s Mumbai division demonstrates a proactive approach to handling seasonal demand while ensuring long-term benefits for passengers and the city’s transport ecosystem.
