Mumbai witnessed relentless rainfall through the night, with the eastern and central parts of the city recording the heaviest downpour. According to officials, Chembur, Dadar, and Worli emerged as the worst-hit areas, reporting maximum rainfall figures within a span of just a few hours. The continuous showers disrupted daily life, leading to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and delays in public transport services.
Civic authorities confirmed that over 180 mm of rainfall was recorded overnight in some localities, adding to the already saturated ground conditions. This intense spell of rain triggered widespread water accumulation on key arterial roads, including stretches near Dadar TT Circle, Sion, and parts of the Eastern Express Highway. Several motorists and commuters were left stranded during morning peak hours as traffic police diverted vehicles from heavily flooded zones. Railway services, often the city’s lifeline, also experienced interruptions. Local trains on both the Central and Western lines reported delays ranging between 15–20 minutes, while harbour line commuters faced longer waiting times due to waterlogged tracks. Meanwhile, the Andheri subway and King’s Circle underpass were closed for traffic to prevent mishaps. BEST bus services, too, were rerouted from waterlogged stretches to ensure continuity of operations.
Residents in Chembur, Dadar, and Worli reported knee-deep water inside housing societies, forcing civic teams to deploy additional pumps for drainage. Many households complained of power cuts in low-lying pockets as a precautionary measure against electrocution. Disaster management teams remained on alert, responding to over 70 complaints of waterlogging and tree collapses across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and adjoining districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors unless necessary and advised office-goers to plan travel in advance. Schools and colleges in the most affected zones were directed to remain closed to ensure student safety.
Urban planning experts highlighted that recurring waterlogging issues in Mumbai stem from outdated stormwater drains and unplanned construction in flood-prone areas. They stressed the need for long-term measures such as sustainable drainage systems, flood-resilient infrastructure, and better waste management to prevent clogging of stormwater lines. Despite the challenges, civic officials assured that dedicated teams are working round-the-clock to restore normalcy. Pumps have been deployed in all vulnerable spots, and coordination with traffic police and railway authorities is being maintained to minimise inconvenience to commuters.
As the monsoon intensifies, residents of Chembur, Dadar, Worli, and surrounding neighbourhoods are bracing for more rain. With the red alert in place, authorities have called for heightened vigilance, emphasising that public safety remains the top priority.
