Ahmedabad braces for heavy rains as Gujarat faces unusual monsoon

Ahmedabad is bracing for yet another spell of intense rainfall this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing the city on heavy rain alert until Saturday. The forecast warns of thunderstorms accompanied by showers through 19-23 August, while partial relief is expected only towards the weekend.

This alert arrives in the backdrop of one of Gujarat’s most erratic monsoon seasons in recent years. Data shows the state has already received over 70 per cent of its annual average rainfall, with much of it concentrated in short, dramatic bursts. Four of Gujarat’s major urban centres Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara have each recorded more than half their seasonal quota within a single week, leaving infrastructure stretched and mobility disrupted.Ahmedabad alone has recorded 55 per cent of its seasonal rainfall in just seven days, amplifying fears of flash floods and waterlogging. In districts such as Dwarka, extreme downpours have been even more striking 138 mm of rain was recorded in a single day, with 120 mm falling within just two hours. Such episodes underline how precipitation has shifted from a gradual seasonal spread to sudden, overwhelming bursts.

Meteorological experts attribute this anomaly to an unusually strong monsoon trough that arrived earlier than expected. Instead of July and August carrying the heaviest downpours, June contributed 34 per cent of Gujarat’s rainfall. July brought 29 per cent, while August so far has accounted for only 7 per cent. The shifting patterns left central and southern Gujarat drenched in June, while northern India bore the brunt of July and early August showers.Climate specialists caution that the intensity of these bursts poses wider socio-economic risks. Agricultural fields face soil erosion and crop damage, while cities like Ahmedabad contend with waterlogging, flight delays and health concerns triggered by flooding. Short, high-volume rains also threaten urban resilience by overwhelming stormwater networks and causing untreated sewage to mix with floodwaters.

For citizens, the week ahead signals delays on the roads, inundated underpasses, and cautious planning for daily routines. Urban planners suggest the need for sustainable drainage systems, permeable road surfaces, and expanded green cover to help absorb rainwater. Officials acknowledge that the city must invest in long-term climate-resilient infrastructure to withstand such unpredictable weather cycles.As Ahmedabad waits out the fresh IMD warning, the monsoon continues to remind residents that its rhythms are no longer predictable. This erratic pattern underscores the urgency of reimagining Indian cities as eco-friendly, flood-resilient and equitable, capable of facing the climate challenges of tomorrow.
