Kolkata Metro short-terminates Blue Line trains after pillar cracks found

Kolkata’s Metro Railway has announced short-termination of several southbound trains on the Blue Line to sustain service frequency after cracks were detected at a key terminal. The temporary move reflects both operational urgency and the challenge of maintaining reliable urban transport while ensuring commuter safety.

Officials confirmed that services on the Dakshineswar–New Garia corridor have been curtailed at specific points, with some trains now turning back at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station and others at Sahid Khudiram. The adjustment follows the suspension of services at Kavi Subhas station, where structural cracks appeared in the pillars of the UP line around a month ago.The short-termination strategy was introduced after an operational review revealed that routing trains through the under-repair Kavi Subhas station was creating service bottlenecks. Trains were previously being sent empty beyond Sahid Khudiram to change tracks before returning to service, leading to delays of 15 minutes or more and causing disruptions across both UP and DN lines.

Metro authorities highlighted that the priority remains a five-minute frequency of trains across the Blue Line, a benchmark that enables commuters to depend on public transport even during peak rush hours. In response to earlier pile-ups, weekday services were increased from 262 to 284 trains, reinforcing the system’s capacity despite the temporary loss of one terminal.Experts note that the crisis underscores the vulnerabilities of India’s expanding urban rail systems, where infrastructure stress is a growing concern. The Blue Line, a crucial north-south corridor in Kolkata’s metro network, carries thousands of daily passengers and plays a vital role in promoting sustainable mobility. Reducing private vehicle dependence hinges on ensuring that such breakdowns are addressed swiftly without compromising commuter trust.

The renovation at Kavi Subhas station is projected to last nine months. Engineers are undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of the affected pillars to ensure long-term safety. Transport specialists argue that the incident offers an opportunity to prioritise rigorous inspection protocols and green engineering methods to make metro systems both safer and more resilient to climate and usage pressures.For now, commuters are being informed through public address systems at origin points such as Dakshineswar and Dumdum about the adjusted terminal stops. While uncertainty around service lengths remains, authorities insist that communication and frequency are being prioritised to reduce inconvenience.
