Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), a subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, is gearing up to make a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) segment by introducing the eCanter truck to the Indian market.
Scheduled for launch later this year, the eCanter represents Daimler’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions and marks its entry into India’s burgeoning EV market. According to sources, the eCanter trucks will be imported to India in the form of kits from Japan and subsequently assembled at DICV’s manufacturing facility in Chennai. This strategic approach not only enables DICV to optimise production costs but also allows for a competitive pricing strategy. By assembling the trucks locally, DICV can leverage the lower customs duty on kits (CKD) at 25%, compared to the higher duty of 40% for fully built commercial vehicles (CVs). The decision to introduce the eCanter in India reflects Daimler’s recognition of the country’s growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions, particularly in the commercial vehicle segment. As India seeks to transition towards cleaner and greener mobility options, the eCanter presents an attractive proposition for fleet operators and logistics companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs.
