Delhi NCR Rains Disrupt Flights, Cause Waterlogging And Massive Traffic

A relentless downpour across Delhi and the National Capital Region on Friday morning paralysed the city’s transport network, grounding flights, delaying metro services and creating severe traffic jams on arterial roads. Over 250 flights were impacted at the Delhi airport, while commuters found themselves stuck in hours-long congestion as heavy waterlogging crippled key stretches.

According to live flight data, at least 209 departures and 43 arrivals faced delays by mid-afternoon, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Airlines issued advisories urging travellers to plan well in advance, warning of extended travel time to the airport as vehicular movement slowed across the capital. Officials confirmed that airport teams were on standby to manage the crowd and assist distressed passengers.

The weather office issued multiple warnings for the region, including a red alert in Noida and Ghaziabad signalling very heavy rainfall. Several parts of Delhi, particularly Pragati Maidan, Defence Colony, and Vikas Marg, reported severe waterlogging. Long vehicle queues stretched from Badarpur to Ashram and further towards Mathura Road, worsening peak-hour delays for office-goers and school buses. The city’s metro network too bore the brunt of the downpour. Commuters on the Yellow Line faced major delays during morning office hours, with train services between Vishwavidyalaya and Central Secretariat slowed significantly. Authorities said services were restored gradually but congestion persisted for several hours.

Beyond Delhi, neighbouring states also remain under weather alerts. Districts in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab have been flagged for potential extreme rainfall, with Uttarakhand expected to witness particularly intense showers. Officials cautioned residents in these states to remain alert and avoid non essential travel. The recurring pattern of urban flooding in Delhi has once again brought the city’s fragile infrastructure into sharp focus. Experts argue that climate volatility combined with unchecked urbanisation has aggravated the risk of waterlogging and transport paralysis. Sustainable solutions such as upgrading drainage systems, adopting permeable pavements and prioritising eco-friendly infrastructure are increasingly seen as critical to prevent the capital from grinding to a halt every monsoon. For now, city authorities have deployed traffic police across bottleneck zones and placed pumping machines to drain flooded stretches. But urban planners caution that without long-term climate resilience measures, Delhi will continue to lurch from one rain induced disruption to another.
