Pune-Mumbai Expressway to Get Eight EV Charging Stations

Maharashtra government has approved the installation of eight EV charging stations along the Pune–Mumbai Expressway. The move, announced by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is aimed at creating a reliable network of sustainable infrastructure for long-distance EV travel across one of the state’s busiest corridors.

The stations will be strategically located along the expressway, ensuring accessibility for commuters and logistics operators alike. Each facility is designed to accommodate multiple vehicles simultaneously, addressing both passenger and commercial EV requirements. The MSRDC has initiated site surveys to finalise optimal locations for the installations. A senior official from MSRDC emphasised the need for robust charging infrastructure as EV adoption continues to rise. “The growing number of electric vehicles using the Pune–Mumbai Expressway makes it essential to provide reliable and efficient charging options. This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainable mobility and reducing carbon emissions,” the official stated.

The development is part of a wider state-level push to encourage clean mobility. Maharashtra has been gradually expanding its EV ecosystem, including the installation of public charging stations in urban centres and along key highways. The network along the Pune–Mumbai Expressway is expected to complement existing infrastructure, enhancing confidence among EV owners regarding long-distance travel. In addition to environmental benefits, the charging stations are expected to support regional economic growth. Experts note that enhanced EV infrastructure can stimulate ancillary industries such as battery maintenance, vehicle servicing, and renewable energy integration. Furthermore, these stations are being designed with gender-neutral access and equitable usage in mind, ensuring inclusivity for all commuters.

Sustainability considerations have been central to the planning process. Each station will incorporate energy-efficient technologies and, where possible, leverage solar power and smart grid integration to reduce the operational carbon footprint. Officials highlighted that such infrastructure aligns with Maharashtra’s vision of promoting zero-emission transport corridors and eco-friendly urban mobility solutions. While the initiative marks a progressive step, experts caution that long-term success depends on regular maintenance, technology upgrades, and public awareness campaigns to encourage EV adoption. Integrating community participation, municipal oversight, and private sector collaboration is likely to be key to the effective operation of these stations.

As Maharashtra positions itself at the forefront of sustainable transport, the Pune–Mumbai Expressway charging network is expected to serve as a model for future EV infrastructure development across India.
