Bengaluru Residents Demand Highway Ramps For Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout Access

Bengaluru residents are pressing for urgent construction of highway ramps to connect Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout’s arterial road with the Mysuru National Highway, citing delays, detours and mounting fuel consumption.

The arterial road, stretching 10.7 km from Magadi Road to Mysuru Road, is a critical corridor that provides access to Challaghatta Metro Station, Rajarajeshwari Medical College and several residential clusters. At present, motorists travelling between this road and the highway can only access entry and exit points at Kumbalgodu or Bidadi. The absence of direct ramps has forced long detours, raising travel times and straining both commuters and emergency services.

Local forums representing residents have consistently flagged this connectivity gap. They argue that without dedicated up and down ramps, the road fails to deliver its intended purpose as a high-capacity link. Community representatives also point to the environmental cost of such inefficiencies, stressing that needless detours fuel higher emissions, undermining the city’s larger sustainability commitments.

Officials acknowledged that the current plan includes a T-junction near Challaghatta Metro Station, but concerns are mounting that it could mimic bottlenecks seen at major choke points such as Silk Board Junction. With traffic volumes projected to grow, mobility experts warn that congestion at this junction would defeat the objective of easing connectivity between Mysuru Road and Magadi Road.The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has indicated that modifications to the plan are under review, though any changes will likely require additional land acquisition by the state government. Engineers from the city’s development authority have also been directed to inspect the site jointly with resident representatives. Officials noted that while the current design offers technical feasibility, it risks compromising commuter convenience and long-term sustainability.

Urban planners argue that Bengaluru cannot afford piecemeal infrastructure solutions. Each poorly designed junction, they say, translates into recurring congestion, wasted man-hours, and higher carbon footprints. Direct ramps, on the other hand, would streamline traffic, reduce dependence on service roads, and provide faster connectivity for commuters and institutions alike.For many residents, the debate is not just about convenience but about equitable urban planning. They emphasise that accessibility for emerging layouts should not be compromised in favour of short-term cost savings. Community members have expressed concern that delays in executing essential linkages erode trust in public agencies and leave citizens grappling with rising costs of living.

As discussions continue, the demand for ramps reflects Bengaluru’s larger mobility challenge balancing rapid growth with climate-conscious infrastructure. Without timely interventions, traffic snarls and mounting emissions may remain an unavoidable by-product of everyday life in the city.
