Indore has witnessed a temporary closure of schools today as authorities respond to continuous heavy rainfall in the district. The district collector has declared a holiday for all students from classes 1 to 12 across government, private, and grant-in-aid schools. Anganwadi centres will also remain closed, reflecting a precautionary approach to ensure student safety and civic convenience amidst persistent downpours.
The city has already received 33.5 inches of rainfall this monsoon, nearing the seasonal average of 38 inches. Recent data shows that between 8:30 AM and 8:30 PM on Friday, Indore recorded 1.7 inches of rain. Meteorological experts predict that with 25 days remaining in September, rainfall levels are likely to meet or even surpass the monthly quota, compensating for the deficits recorded in July and August. Earlier this week, heavy precipitation between Wednesday night and Thursday contributed nearly 7 inches of rainfall, exceeding September’s average of 6 inches in just four days. Such intense rainfall episodes have not only replenished the city’s monsoon levels but have also influenced local temperatures. Thursday’s readings revealed a maximum of 24.0°C, six degrees below the norm, while the minimum temperature hovered at 23.2°C, slightly above average.
Weather officials emphasise that moderate to heavy rain is expected over the next five to seven days, which could intensify waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect city mobility. “The persistent showers are typical for this period, and while they contribute positively to the groundwater levels and urban greenery, citizens should exercise caution while travelling,” said an official from the Meteorological Department. The decision to close schools underscores the need for adaptive urban planning in climate-vulnerable cities. Indore, like many Indian urban centres, faces challenges in balancing educational continuity with public safety during extreme weather events. Experts suggest that integrating real-time weather data, robust drainage infrastructure, and eco-sensitive urban designs could enhance resilience while minimising disruption.
