Mumbai To Get 12 15 18 Coach Fully AC Vande Metro

Mumbai’s suburbanrail system, among the busiest in the world, is preparing for a landmark upgrade with the planned introduction of fully air-conditioned Vande Metro trains in 12, 15, and 18-coach formats. The move is expected to transform commuter experience in the financial capital by reducing overcrowding and providing comfort in a city that struggles daily with transit pressure.

The project is being advanced by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd (MRVC), which has floated a global tender worth approximately ₹21,000 crore. The plan covers procurement of 2,856 coaches, their maintenance for 35 years, and the creation of two state-of-the-art depots to serve Central and Western Railways. Bids will open in December, signalling the seriousness of the undertaking within the Mumbai Urban Transport Project’s third phase.

Officials involved in the project have underlined that these trains will be equipped with modern commuter-friendly features, including automatic door-closing systems, advanced braking technology, cushioned seating, mobile charging points, and vendor compartments. More importantly, all coaches will be fully air-conditioned with separate cooling ducts, ensuring uninterrupted comfort even during the city’s punishing summer months.

The prototype of the Vande Metro trains is expected within two years of awarding the contract. Once operational, they will set a new benchmark for suburban commuting, offering faster acceleration, smoother deceleration, and efficient passenger movement. Experts suggest that the improved design will directly help decongest Mumbai’s suburban corridors, where more than 70 lakh passengers travel daily.

The investment also carries strong implications for sustainability. Authorities have indicated that the new fleet will incorporate energy-efficient systems, aligning with India’s broader push for net-zero commitments in transport. Advanced materials, regenerative braking, and streamlined designs are expected to lower the carbon footprint of daily suburban operations. For a city where road traffic congestion and vehicular pollution remain pressing issues, the shift towards greener rail mobility has become both an environmental and social necessity.

The initiative follows the Maharashtra government’s recent approval of new metro projects, including a circular line in Thane and a corridor from Wadala to the Gateway of India. Together, these upgrades mark a decisive step towards modernising urban mobility in Mumbai and ensuring equitable access to safe, affordable, and climate-friendly public transport.Transport specialists point out that while the transformation will take time, the direction is clear. Mumbai is steadily moving towards a suburban rail system that balances efficiency, passenger comfort, and sustainability. For millions who depend on trains daily, the Vande Metro rollout could well redefine how the city moves.
