Indian Railways has initiated a 15-day nationwide cleanliness campaign, ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’, across all its zones, focusing on stations and office premises to promote hygiene, environmental responsibility, and civic participation. The campaign, directed by the Railway Board Chairman and CEO, is scheduled to conclude on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Bharat Diwas, emphasising both historical and environmental significance.
Officials highlighted that the initiative is rooted in fostering collective responsibility and citizen engagement, reflecting a ‘Whole of Society’ and ‘Whole of Government’ approach. Over the years, this annual drive has successfully mobilised citizens, institutional leadership, and railway personnel nationwide, encouraging sustainable practices and eco-conscious behaviour. The campaign commenced at New Delhi Railway Station, where railway officers and staff took the Swachhata Pledge and participated in ‘shramdan’—voluntary labour activities—to clean and maintain station premises. Similar pledges and voluntary work were conducted across key stations in the Northern Railway zone, including Baroda House, Katra, and Srinagar, reinforcing the culture of shared accountability.
Throughout the 15-day programme, railway authorities plan to conduct interactive workshops, fitness and cleanliness events, tree plantations, and awareness drives targeting both staff and passengers. The Clean Food Initiative, which involves hygiene demonstrations for pantry cars and utensils, will be implemented alongside waste disposal inspections and door-to-door campaigns. Officials emphasised that such measures aim to reduce environmental impact while promoting zero-waste practices and sanitation awareness among commuters and employees alike. Experts from Indian Railways stressed that the initiative is part of a broader sustainable urban and transport agenda, linking public health, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. By integrating green practices into station operations, including proper waste segregation, recycling, and hygiene maintenance, the campaign seeks to set a benchmark for eco-friendly infrastructure management in transport hubs.
Public relations officers across railway divisions reported active engagement, highlighting that the programme has generated significant awareness and community participation. “The focus is on long-term behaviour change, not just temporary improvements,” officials said, noting that collaboration with local communities and volunteers strengthens the campaign’s reach and impact. As Indian Railways continues to expand its green initiatives, ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ represents a critical step in combining operational efficiency with sustainable practices, promoting environmental consciousness, and reinforcing the railway’s commitment to social and ecological responsibility.
