Delhi IGI Airport Terminal 2 Reopens October 26 With Upgrades

Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi is preparing to reopen its upgraded Terminal 2 from October 26, coinciding with the launch of the winter flight schedule. The renovation aims to enhance operational efficiency and provide passengers with a modern, seamless travel experience. Currently, Terminals 1 and 3 remain operational, while Terminal 2 had been closed since April for extensive refurbishment.

Airport officials describe the revamped terminal as a comprehensive reimagination of the passenger journey. The upgraded facility introduces advanced technologies, including Self Baggage Drop (SBD) counters and autonomous docking aerobridges, which empower travellers and streamline airport operations. The terminal will handle approximately 120 daily domestic flights, with major carriers shifting operations from other terminals to improve efficiency and reduce congestion.

Experts highlight that the SBD counters are designed to reduce wait times, allowing passengers greater control over the check-in process. Meanwhile, the six new passenger boarding bridges employ autonomous docking technology, marking the first implementation of such systems in India. These innovations aim to enhance both operational safety and the overall passenger experience.

In addition to technological upgrades, Terminal 2 has undergone significant improvements in safety, accessibility, and passenger comfort. Modern HVAC systems, upgraded fire safety measures, reinforced power infrastructure, and a high-resolution Flight Information Display System (FIDS) have been installed. Renovations also include refurbished airside and apron facilities, enhanced interiors with improved flooring and lighting, and clear signage to facilitate smoother passenger movement. Accessibility features for persons with reduced mobility and improved road connectivity further support an inclusive and efficient travel environment.Aviation analysts suggest that these upgrades not only improve passenger convenience but also align with IGI Airport’s broader sustainability goals. By optimising operations and incorporating energy-efficient technologies, the terminal contributes to eco-friendly urban infrastructure while preparing the airport for projected growth in India’s aviation sector.

Officials emphasise that the terminal’s reopening represents a commitment to world-class standards, combining safety, accessibility, and advanced technology. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce operational bottlenecks and enhance passenger satisfaction, positioning IGI Airport as a benchmark for modern airport management in India. With the reopening of Terminal 2, Delhi’s aviation infrastructure takes a decisive step toward improved efficiency, sustainability, and passenger-focused operations, reflecting the city’s vision of smart, inclusive, and technologically advanced urban mobility
