Pune Metro Line 3 To Be Operated By Women Pilots Next Year

Pune is set to make history in urban transport as the city’s Metro Line 3 prepares to be operated entirely by women pilots, reflecting a strong push for gender inclusivity in India’s public transit sector. The 23.3-kilometre elevated corridor will connect the IT hub of Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar and the Civil Court, and operations are scheduled to commence in March 2026.

A dedicated team of 100 women, recruited locally from Pune and surrounding areas, has been undergoing intensive training since July. The programme, spanning three months, included 200 kilometres of supervised driving under varying conditions, both during day and night, ensuring that each pilot meets strict operational standards. Trial runs along the corridor, particularly between Maan Depot and Balewadi Stadium, have demonstrated the team’s readiness and confidence in managing the city’s high-density metro operations.

Officials from Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), the operational consortium, emphasised that the initiative is designed to combine technical proficiency with safety, well-being, and long-term workforce integration. The pilots, many of whom have prior experience in engineering and metro operations, are being trained under French company Keolis, which is responsible for operational management, while Tata and Siemens provide technical support under a public-private partnership framework.

Urban mobility experts suggest that the launch of an all-women loco pilot team sends a strong societal signal. Beyond operational efficiency, it positions Pune as a leader in equitable transport solutions. The initiative aligns with global trends of promoting gender diversity, empowering women in traditionally male-dominated sectors, and enhancing safety and service reliability in urban public transport.Sustainability remains a key focus, with Line 3 designed to support low-carbon mobility and reduce road congestion. Officials note that fostering inclusive and environmentally conscious infrastructure ensures that urban development benefits all residents while meeting long-term climate targets.

The initiative also highlights the importance of rigorous training and operational discipline, setting a benchmark for future urban transit projects across India. As Pune Metro Line 3 prepares for its commercial launch, the Nari Shakti team is poised not only to operate trains but also to inspire a generation of young women to pursue careers in engineering, public transport, and sustainable urban services. Their success will mark a significant milestone in combining technological innovation with social progress in India’s growing cities.
