Unlocking Water Wealth SSNNL’s Strategic Reservoir Management

Amidst the scorching summer heat, the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) has initiated a significant water release program, augmenting the flow by nearly 20,000 cusecs into the primary canal of the Narmada dam.

This proactive measure stems from a heightened demand for irrigation water, as temperatures soar and agricultural needs intensify across the region. Notably, the current volume of water discharge marks a substantial increase, surpassing previous norms, with a recent peak at 21,000 cusecs. This surge in release contrasts sharply with the typical average of approximately 10,000 cusecs witnessed since the end of March. Presently, the Narmada dam’s water level stands at 120 metres, bolstered by an inflow of approximately 10,000 cusecs from upstream dams situated in Madhya Pradesh. The reservoir’s live storage capacity registers at 1,336 Million Cubic Metres (MCM), constituting 23 percent of the total live storage. Accounting for the dead storage, the dam approaches a significant fill level of 58 percent, as per official reports.

Officials at SSNNL highlight the pivotal role of government directives in this strategic manoeuvre, emphasising the imperative to fulfil irrigation needs during the summer season. The decision to boost water release aligns with the state’s commitment to support farmers, ensuring adequate irrigation coverage. Furthermore, SSNNL underscores the necessity to maintain canal functionality throughout the extensive network of Sardar Sarovar, mitigating evaporation losses exacerbated by seasonal heat. SSNNL’s proactive approach signifies a calculated response to evolving climatic conditions and agricultural demands. By strategically managing water resources and adhering to governmental mandates, the organisation demonstrates its commitment to sustainable water utilisation and agricultural prosperity amidst challenging environmental circumstances.
