Delhi to Install Solar Panels on 1000 Buildings Generating 55 MW

Delhi is taking a significant stride towards sustainable energy with plans to install solar panels on around 1,000 public buildings, aiming to generate 55 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. The initiative, announced by government officials, is expected to transform the capital’s energy consumption patterns, enhance sustainability, and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

The solar installations will cover hundreds of schools, over 40 fire stations, 24 offices of the Delhi Jal Board, and more than 70 Municipal Corporation of Delhi buildings. According to officials, the programme will not only promote renewable energy but also yield annual savings exceeding Rs 50 crore in electricity bills. Experts estimate that the project could reduce the city’s carbon footprint by 46,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, marking a major environmental achievement.

Officials highlighted that the move aligns with Delhi’s broader urban development goals, emphasizing energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and the creation of a low-carbon urban infrastructure. The solar panels will be integrated using advanced technology to optimise energy production, while maintaining minimal maintenance and operational costs for government departments.The project is part of a growing trend across Indian cities to harness renewable energy for municipal buildings and public infrastructure.
