Mumbai is set to witness a major clean energy boost as Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, secures approval to develop an 80 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project. The initiative, backed by an investment of around INR 1,200 crore, aims to strengthen the city’s energy security while supporting low-carbon and sustainable urban development. The project is slated for completion within 24 months.
Under the FDRE framework, the plant will combine solar and wind generation with advanced battery storage, enabling it to deliver power during peak demand periods. Officials highlighted that the facility will generate nearly 315 million units of electricity annually, significantly contributing to the city’s renewable energy mix. Furthermore, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 0.25 million tonnes each year, reinforcing Tata Power’s commitment to sustainability and net-zero goals. The project guarantees four hours of power supply during high-demand periods with at least 90 percent assured availability, directly addressing the growing consumption needs of Tata Power Mumbai Distribution’s customers. Experts also noted that this initiative will help the utility meet its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO), aligning with the mandates of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Once operational, the clean energy generated will integrate seamlessly into Mumbai’s power distribution network, benefiting approximately 800,000 consumers across residential, commercial, and industrial segments. The initiative is expected to enhance grid stability and ensure a reliable supply of low-emission electricity to the city’s diverse energy users. TPREL’s renewable capacity currently stands at 11.3 GW, with 5.6 GW already operational and 9.4 GW covered under signed power purchase agreements. The company’s portfolio includes 4.6 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind projects, alongside over 15.7 GW of ground-mounted solar EPC and more than 3 GW of rooftop and distributed solar installations nationwide. This latest addition in Mumbai is seen as a critical step to accommodate the city’s rising energy demand while maintaining environmental responsibility.
Officials emphasised that the project reflects a broader strategy to ensure sustainable energy growth, support cleaner urban infrastructure, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. With increasing electricity requirements in Mumbai, especially during peak summer months, the FDRE project is expected to offer both stability and scalability, demonstrating how innovative renewable solutions can meet urban energy challenges efficiently. The FDRE initiative reinforces Mumbai’s transition toward cleaner, sustainable energy systems, strengthening both the resilience and sustainability of the city’s electricity network. With Tata Power leading this push, Mumbai is set to emerge as a model for urban renewable integration and low-carbon energy infrastructure in India.
