NHAI Rolls Out QR Code Signboards Across Major Highways for Travelers

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out a nationwide initiative to install QR code signboards across major national highways, marking a transformative step in digitally connected road infrastructure. Designed to provide instant access to vital project information and essential services, the QR-enabled signboards aim to enhance transparency, improve road safety, and boost the overall travel experience for millions of commuters.

The vertical QR signboards, strategically placed at critical locations such as toll plazas, rest areas, and key highway entry and exit points, will deliver real-time information about the highways, including project details, construction timelines, and maintenance updates. Travelers scanning the codes will receive instant access to emergency helplines, including highway patrol and medical services, along with contacts of toll managers, project engineers, and local NHAI field offices. This initiative seeks to address both convenience and safety concerns for highway users. Commuters will be able to locate nearby hospitals, fuel stations, restaurants, police stations, and electric vehicle charging points with a simple scan. The system also provides details of vehicle repair shops, truck lay-byes, and other essential facilities, particularly in rural or less-developed stretches where such services may be limited.

Officials highlighted that this move forms part of NHAI’s broader digitization agenda, reflecting a commitment to technologically advanced, sustainable, and user-friendly infrastructure. “By integrating digital tools directly into the highway ecosystem, we are enhancing transparency and accessibility, making travel safer and more efficient for all users,” said an NHAI spokesperson. For travelers, the signboards offer actionable benefits. Regular scanning of QR codes allows users to stay updated on road conditions, construction work, or closures, enabling better journey planning and reducing unexpected delays. Emergency contact information and nearby service listings can be saved for quick access, ensuring that assistance is always within reach during long journeys.

The QR code system aligns with India’s push towards smart, eco-friendly transport infrastructure. By reducing dependency on printed signage and improving information dissemination, the initiative contributes to sustainable highway management. Experts note that digitally connected highways can serve as a model for improving road safety and commuter convenience nationwide. As India’s highway network expands, the NHAI’s QR code initiative promises to reshape travel experiences by combining safety, transparency, and digital convenience. Commuters on routes such as the Golden Quadrilateral and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will now have reliable, real-time access to project updates and services, ensuring smoother, more informed journeys. This development underscores the evolving vision of a digitally empowered, sustainable, and equitable transport ecosystem.
