Pune and its surrounding regions in western Maharashtra are set to experience subdued rainfall over the coming days, with no alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city, which witnessed only light showers over the weekend, will continue to see limited precipitation, maintaining stable conditions across both urban and rural areas.
IMD officials indicated that rainfall across Pune’s main water catchment areas—including Khadakwasla, Temghar, Panshet, and Varasgaon dams—remained negligible, despite the dams collectively storing 29 TMC of water at nearly full capacity. “Partly cloudy skies are expected to become generally cloudy by afternoon or evening, with very light rain likely,” the forecast stated, reflecting a steady weather pattern without any significant disruption. The subdued rainfall aligns with broader atmospheric conditions across western and north Maharashtra, where light precipitation ranging from nil to 10 mm was recorded on Sunday. This trend is consistent with the gradual withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from additional parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and select regions of Maharashtra over the next 4–5 days.
Meanwhile, other parts of India continue to witness intense rainfall. Heavy to very heavy precipitation, ranging between 7 and 20 cm, was observed over isolated regions in Marathwada, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, while heavy rainfall of 7–11 cm occurred in East Rajasthan, Gangetic West Bengal, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Arunachal Pradesh. IMD officials have also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the northwest and west-central Arabian Sea, adjoining northeast and east-central Arabian Sea, central Arabian Sea, and along the Gujarat–north Maharashtra coasts until October 7. These advisories follow the movement of severe cyclonic storm Shakthi, which was located over the northwest and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea on Sunday, moving west-southwest and expected to weaken gradually before recurve eastwards over the Arabian Sea.
The IMD highlighted the influence of associated cyclonic circulations over northeast Bihar and the presence of troughs extending from north Bihar to north Odisha and from Andhra Pradesh to the Comorin area, which, along with a fresh western disturbance expected to impact northwest India from October 6, have contributed to varied regional weather patterns. While Pune remains largely dry, residents and urban planners can use this period to manage water resources and ensure preparedness for any sudden shifts in weather. The city’s stable monsoon withdrawal phase offers a window to maintain eco-friendly water conservation strategies and sustainable urban management practices.
As the monsoon recedes gradually across India, authorities continue to monitor dam levels, rainfall, and cyclone movement, emphasising both urban resilience and regional preparedness. This balanced approach ensures that cities like Pune remain equipped to handle emerging weather dynamics while promoting sustainability and climate-resilient urban management.

Pune Records Minimal Rainfall as IMD Issues No Alerts
