Mumbai’s suburban transit network is set for a significant upgrade, with authorities confirming that Metro 9 from Dahisar East to Mira-Bhayander will become operational by December 15, followed by Metro 4 connecting Wadala to Kasarvadavli in Thane by December 31. Officials emphasised that the accelerated timelines are crucial to enhancing mobility for residents in Thane and Mira-Bhayander, while also addressing urban aesthetics and sustainable infrastructure practices along the corridors.
During a review at the MMRDA headquarters, officials outlined plans to prevent encroachment and deterioration of public spaces beneath metro bridges. Inspired by urban greenery initiatives like those implemented for Nagpur Metro, authorities recommended creating gardens and maintaining them through private agencies in return for advertising rights. The approach aims to integrate commuter infrastructure with green urban spaces while preserving public utility. The meeting also assessed progress on the metro car shed projects at Dongri in Bhayander and Mogharpada in Thane. Experts noted that timely completion of these facilities is pivotal for the seamless functioning of both Metro 4 and 9. Integrating operational support with aesthetic urban planning is part of a broader commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly city transport that reduces carbon emissions and enhances urban liveability.
Urban transport authorities underlined that these metro lines would significantly cut travel time and improve accessibility across Mumbai’s northern suburbs. By linking densely populated residential and commercial hubs with high-frequency rapid transit, the projects aim to provide an equitable mobility solution, promoting gender-neutral access and safer commuting options.
