Lucknow Launches India First Door to Door Rail Logistics Service

Lucknow has become the focal point of a landmark initiative by Indian Railways, with the inauguration of the country’s first door-to-door logistics service, operated by the Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR). This move is aimed at modernising freight transport, enhancing operational efficiency, and offering unprecedented convenience to businesses and end-users across India.

The new service is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to expand multimodal logistics networks, reduce reliance on road transport, and lower carbon emissions associated with freight movement. By directly connecting manufacturing units, warehouses, and customers, the initiative reduces transit time, streamlines cargo handling, and supports sustainable, eco-friendly transport solutions.Officials from Indian Railways highlighted that the initiative is designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing freight corridors, leveraging rail’s energy-efficient capacity to transport bulk and containerised cargo. CONCOR, the government-owned logistics company, will oversee operations, ensuring standardised pickup and delivery procedures, real-time tracking, and improved supply chain reliability.

Experts emphasised that door-to-door rail logistics can significantly reduce road congestion in industrial corridors, particularly in high-traffic regions. “This is a transformative step for India’s logistics ecosystem. Rail transport is inherently more sustainable than road transport, and integrating it with first- and last-mile connectivity will make supply chains greener and more efficient,” said a senior railway official overseeing freight modernization initiatives.Industry analysts predict that this service could reshape logistics patterns for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which often struggle with fragmented transport networks and high freight costs.
