Delhi Roads Grind to Halt as Diwali Traffic Surges Across City

Delhi is witnessing unprecedented traffic congestion as the Diwali festival drives citywide travel to a standstill. Commuters across the capital and adjoining cities, including Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, are grappling with hours-long jams on major arterial roads. Traffic-monitoring platforms showed widespread “red zones,” indicating severe gridlock, while social media users voiced frustration, urging others to avoid travel if possible.

Key stretches, such as Outer Ring Road, Ring Road in South Delhi, Mathura Road between Pragati Maidan and Badarpur, Aurobindo Marg, Barapullah elevated road, DND Flyway, and Delhi–Meerut Expressway, are experiencing bumper-to-bumper conditions. Urban mobility experts say such congestion is predictable during Diwali due to increased personal vehicle use, festive shopping, and inadequate last-mile traffic planning.

Commuters reported delays of over two hours, with some stranded in slow-moving traffic for extended periods. Residents and visitors alike took to social media to highlight the challenges. Posts ranged from warnings and advice to stay home to humorous content reflecting the shared frustration. Experts note that this public response highlights both the human cost of traffic congestion and the demand for more efficient urban transport solutions during peak seasons.

In response, the Delhi Police deployed maximum personnel across critical locations. Motorcycle-mounted units were assigned to monitor and guide traffic, while leaves for officers were cancelled to ensure full manpower availability. Officials emphasised that contingency measures, including dynamic traffic signal adjustments and temporary diversions, were being actively implemented to ease congestion. Urban planners suggest that while such measures provide temporary relief, long-term solutions must include better public transport, traffic decongestion policies, and proactive planning for festival peaks.

Analysts point out that Delhi’s recurring traffic crises highlight systemic urban planning challenges. During peak festive periods, roads designed decades ago face immense strain from both rising private vehicle ownership and inadequate last-mile connectivity. While authorities mobilise resources during festivals, structural solutions such as expanded public transit, dedicated festival traffic corridors, and smart traffic management systems are essential to reduce recurring gridlocks.As the Diwali rush continues, city commuters are advised to plan travel carefully, rely on public transport where feasible, and remain patient amid unavoidable delays. Officials confirmed that ongoing monitoring will continue for the duration of the festival, with real-time adjustments made to manage flow.
