Forest Officials Intensify Search for Vasai Leopard Amid Rising
In the wake of growing apprehension among residents of Vasai West over the presence of a leopard spotted in the Vasai fort vicinity, forest officials have escalated their efforts to locate and contain the elusive big cat.
The Maharashtra Forest Department, in collaboration with local NGOs, has undertaken a comprehensive search operation in the area to track the leopard’s movements and ensure public safety.According to a statement from a forest department official, the camera trapping exercise has been intensified, and additional measures, including search operations, have been deployed to pinpoint the whereabouts of the leopard. However, concerns persist among locals as the authorities have yet to trap the leopard, prompting frustration and anxiety within the community. Addressing the delay in trapping the leopard, the forest department official emphasised the necessity of obtaining permissions from the chief wildlife warden before initiating such actions. Despite concerted efforts by the forest department and NGOs, challenges persist due to misinformation spread by certain media channels, exacerbating public panic and hindering effective wildlife management efforts.
Recent analysis of camera trap images revealed that the photographed leopard is a male from the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, further underscoring the need for coordinated efforts to understand its movement patterns and mitigate potential risks to human safety. Researchers and forest officials are actively exploring the leopard’s probable route to Vasai Fort, aiming to devise strategies for its safe relocation. As the search for the Vasai leopard continues, collaboration between authorities, local communities, and wildlife enthusiasts remains paramount. By fostering understanding and cooperation, stakeholders can navigate challenges and ensure the well-being of both humans and wildlife in the region.
