Mumbai Airport to Undergo Maintenance Shutdown on May 9

In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to undergo a temporary closure for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work on May 9.

The annual practice, aimed at ensuring operational continuity and passenger safety, will see both cross-runways – the primary runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32 – remain non-operational from 11 am to 5 pm. According to a statement issued by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the six-hour runway closure is essential for conducting detailed technical inspections of the runway surface to address any wear and tear resulting from day-to-day operations. This proactive measure aims to maintain the durability and longevity of the runway infrastructure, mitigating potential risks such as waterlogging and ensuring safe landings and take-offs, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

The pre-monsoon maintenance exercise, integral to CSMIA’s monsoon contingency plan, encompasses repairing any damages to the runways and enhancing their resilience to withstand inclement weather. By implementing these measures, the airport aims to minimise disruptions to flight schedules and reduce inconvenience to passengers. To facilitate effective coordination and communication, the airport has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to all stakeholders, including airlines and air traffic control, to manage flight operations during the temporary closure period. This proactive approach underscores the airport’s commitment to maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring passenger safety.
