Pune Metro Line 2 Maha Metro To Issue Tender For 1163 Km Ramwadi Wagholi Extension

Pune is set to witness a major expansion of its urban rail network as Maha Metro prepares to issue the tender for the 11.63-kilometre extension of Metro Line 2, connecting Ramwadi to Wagholi and further to Vitthalwadi. The extension will feature 11 new stations and include a double-decker flyover, mirroring the design of the integrated elevated corridor on Karve Road, aimed at decongesting traffic and streamlining commuter movement.

The extension is part of the Pune-Shirur Elevated Corridor project, with the cost of the metro viaduct and elevated bridge shared between Maha Metro and the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC). Once operational, the extension, along with the recently tendered western section from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, will bring the total length of Pune Metro Line 2 to 28.45 km, encompassing 29 stations across the city. Maha Metro officials highlighted the integration of the extension with existing infrastructure to enhance commuter convenience. A 580-metre-long foot-overbridge is planned at Chandni Chowk, connecting seamlessly with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) overpass. The bridge will allow pedestrians to safely traverse the Mumbai-Bengaluru national highway, facilitating smoother access to the metro stations and reducing dependence on vehicular transport.

“The footover bridge at Chandni Chowk will significantly ease pedestrian movement and provide safe access to both sides of the national highway,” said a Maha Metro official. The infrastructure initiative underscores a growing emphasis on integrating metro networks with urban mobility corridors, enhancing efficiency while promoting sustainable transport. Transport analysts observe that the Ramwadi-Wagholi-Vitthalwadi extension is poised to reduce traffic congestion significantly, particularly along key arterial routes. By combining elevated metro corridors with flyovers, the project not only shortens travel times but also reduces fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with Pune’s goal of sustainable urban mobility.

Experts also note the broader urban planning implications of such extensions. “Expanding metro connectivity along growing residential and industrial belts encourages the use of public transport, mitigates congestion, and improves overall air quality,” said an urban transport specialist. The dual approach of metro viaducts and pedestrian infrastructure is consistent with global best practices for eco-friendly city transport planning. With the tendering process imminent, stakeholders across the transport and infrastructure sectors are closely monitoring the project. The metro expansion represents a strategic step in transforming Pune’s urban landscape, combining connectivity, sustainability, and commuter convenience while ensuring minimal environmental disruption.

As the city progresses toward a fully integrated urban transport system, the Ramwadi-Wagholi-Vitthalwadi Metro Line 2 extension exemplifies a forward-looking approach to sustainable mobility, bridging key residential, industrial, and transit corridors in a rapidly growing metropolis.
