Maharashtra government has sanctioned ₹50 crore to establish NaMo Tourism Information and Facility Centres at four historic forts — Pratapgad, Raigad, Shivneri, and Salher. The decision marks the first phase of a broader ₹200 crore plan to modernise tourist infrastructure across 75 destinations under the NaMo tourism initiative.
Officials confirmed that the sanctioned funds will facilitate the creation of high-quality visitor centres designed to enhance the experience at these landmark sites. Each centre will integrate heritage preservation with modern amenities, reflecting the state’s push towards sustainable and inclusive tourism. Architectural experts and theme-based designers will be engaged to ensure that the structures align with the natural and historical context of each fort. The proposed NaMo centres will offer multiple facilities under one roof — information kiosks, digital experience rooms, multilingual assistance, emergency response systems, and travel operator linkages. Each centre will also include eco-conscious amenities such as electric vehicle (EV) charging points, first-aid and primary health services, mother-and-child care rooms, and dedicated areas for differently-abled and senior citizens. The centres will employ artificial intelligence-based technology to improve visitor safety, crowd management, and digital access to historical archives.
Officials have issued strict guidelines to ensure transparency and accountability in execution. The tender process for the approved works must commence immediately, and projects must be completed within three years. Once initiated, no alterations in design, scope, or execution mechanisms will be permitted. Contractors of established repute will be selected to maintain quality standards, and expenditure will not be allowed to exceed the sanctioned amount. According to tourism officials, signages will be placed at each site to indicate that the funds are provided under the Regional Tourism Development Scheme. All projects must obtain both technical and financial approvals before commencement. Furthermore, tourist facilities such as accommodation and meeting spaces, if created, will remain under the purview of the tourism department, ensuring that commercial use remains regulated and community access is preserved.
Experts believe this initiative could serve as a model for integrating heritage conservation with modern tourism management. The forts chosen for the first phase hold deep historical significance and attract thousands of visitors annually, yet lack adequate infrastructure.
