Mumbai’s weather took a refreshing turn on Thursday morning as the city woke up to cloudy skies, a mild haze, and notably cleaner air following brief but impactful showers earlier in the week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that no fresh rain warnings have been issued for the day, but intermittent drizzles and partly cloudy conditions are likely to persist through the day, keeping temperatures moderate and the air cleaner.
Meteorological officials said that Mumbai’s maximum temperature is expected to stay around 33°C, while the minimum may dip to 25°C. The showers earlier this week provided much-needed relief from a spell of rising heat and air stagnation that had caused a deterioration in air quality across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to the IMD’s morning nowcast issued at 7:20 am, light to moderate spells of rain are “very likely” to occur over Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Nashik, Satara, and Nanded districts in the next few hours. Weather experts noted that such light rain events, although brief, help improve air circulation and wash away airborne pollutants that have been accumulating due to stagnant wind conditions.
Data from AQI.in revealed that Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 56 on Thursday morning, categorised as “Moderate” — a significant improvement from the “Unhealthy” levels recorded earlier in the month. Environmental experts said this short spell of rain has improved visibility and reduced the concentration of fine particulate matter in the air. Wadala Truck Terminal recorded the city’s highest AQI at 70, followed by Jogeshwari and Santacruz East at 68. Other monitoring stations in Parel-Bhoiwada and Chembur also reported moderate air quality levels at 65. On the brighter side, suburban areas such as Kandivali East, Borivali East, Bhandup West, Malad West, and Powai reported AQI levels between 47 and 50 — firmly in the “Good” category.
Officials from the civic environmental department said that while rainfall episodes improve air quality temporarily, sustained cleaner air will depend on emission control measures, better waste management, and reduced vehicular pollution. They reiterated the importance of expanding green zones, promoting e-mobility, and ensuring stricter implementation of construction dust control regulations to make such improvements more consistent. While the IMD does not expect heavy rainfall in the coming days, the mild showers and moderate temperatures are expected to persist through the weekend — offering much-needed comfort to residents and improving the city’s overall air quality outlook.
