India is embarking on an ambitious journey towards developing its own indigenous bullet trains, aiming to surpass speeds of 250 kilometres per hour (kmph), surpassing the capabilities of existing trains in the Indian Railways network. According to a top government official, this home-built bullet train will outpace any train currently operating in India.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Indian Railways’ Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, where designs for the high-speed trains are being meticulously prepared. Leveraging the Vande Bharat platform, which already boasts a maximum speed of 220 kmph, engineers are striving to push the boundaries of speed and efficiency in rail travel.

Globally, high-speed trains are defined as those capable of operating at speeds exceeding 250 kmph, comparable to renowned models such as the French TGV and the Japanese Shinkansen. India is adopting Japanese technology for its bullet trains, particularly for the line connecting Ahmedabad to Mumbai. The Shinkansen E5 series trains, known for their remarkable speed of up to 320 kmph, will be deployed on this route, promising unparalleled velocity and connectivity. The development of indigenous bullet trains signifies a paradigm shift in India’s rail infrastructure strategy, with a renewed focus on enhancing domestic technological capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign expertise. By leveraging homegrown innovation and expertise, India aims to expand its high-speed rail network across key corridors, including north, south, and east, thereby revolutionising intercity connectivity and bolstering economic growth.

The shift towards indigenous bullet trains complements existing collaborations with international partners, such as Japan’s involvement in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project. With significant progress already made in pier construction and land acquisition, the project is poised to transform the landscape of rail travel in India, offering commuters a faster, safer, and more sustainable mode of transportation. As the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) steers the bullet train project forward, stakeholders anticipate the seamless integration of indigenous technology and expertise into the country’s burgeoning high-speed rail network. With a strong emphasis on domestic manufacturing and technology adoption, India is poised to emerge as a global leader in high-speed rail innovation, driving progress and prosperity for generations to come.
