Navi Mumbai’s long-awaited international airport is set to begin commercial operations on 25 December, following announcements by major domestic carriers confirming their readiness to launch services from the new hub. The development is expected to reshape air travel dynamics in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), ease congestion at the existing airport, and strengthen regional connectivity as passenger demand continues to rise.
According to airline officials, IndiGo and another domestic carrier have finalised plans to commence operations from the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) from Christmas Day. The confirmations mark the first formal indication that the city’s second major airport—designed to complement the overburdened Mumbai International Airport—will be operational by the end of the year. Industry experts say the rollout will be critical in distributing traffic more evenly across the region and supporting long-term aviation growth. IndiGo, currently India’s largest airline by fleet and market share, has announced the launch of services connecting NMIA to ten domestic destinations. These include Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mopa in North Goa, Jaipur, Nagpur, Kochi and Mangaluru. A senior airline official noted that operations will expand in phases, allowing the new airport to stabilise workflows while gradually ramping up capacity.
Another rapidly growing domestic airline has confirmed it will launch its maiden service from NMIA on 25 December, beginning with a Delhi connection. Services to Goa, Kochi and Ahmedabad will follow in the subsequent days. The carrier plans to progressively scale operations to around 300 domestic and 50 international departures per week, reinforcing NMIA’s role as a strategic gateway for western India. Spread across more than 1,100 hectares, the airport’s first development phase includes a single runway and terminal designed to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Built at an estimated cost exceeding ₹19,000 crore, the project has been positioned as a major capacity enhancer for the region. Urban planners observe that the airport’s multi-modal access design, including metro, road and future water transport integration, aligns with broader goals of creating sustainable, low-emission mobility corridors.
Officials familiar with the project noted that NMIA is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing the operational strain on Mumbai’s existing airport, which handles some of the highest traffic volumes in the country. By improving distribution of air traffic and enabling easier access for residents of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and the wider MMR, the new facility is seen as essential for ensuring more equitable mobility across the region. Industry analysts add that the airport’s launch carries significant economic implications, with potential to catalyse growth in logistics, hospitality and commercial real estate around the upcoming aerocity zone. With operations now poised to begin, NMIA is expected to serve as a model for future-ready, sustainable aviation infrastructure that supports both national connectivity goals and regional development priorities.
