Kochi is preparing for a decisive leap in intra-city mobility as five crucial bridge projects move towards construction, promising shorter commutes and smoother travel across the coastal district. The upcoming infrastructure push — stretching from Kumbalam to Thevara, Pizhala to Kadamakkudy, and a new railway overbridge in Vaduthala — marks one of the city’s largest connectivity upgrades in recent years, with far-reaching implications for residents, the local economy, and access to public services.
Officials from the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) confirmed that land acquisition processes for the Kumbalam–Thevara and Pizhala–Kadamakkudy bridges are nearing completion, paving the way for civil works to begin. The revised project estimate for the Kumbalam–Thevara bridge, now pegged at ₹80 crore, has been submitted for financial approval. Once cleared, the tendering process will be fast-tracked. According to planners, the bridge will reduce the current commute between the two regions by almost 10 km and cut travel time by nearly half an hour, easing pressure on heavily used city corridors. Meanwhile, the Vaduthala railway overbridge (ROB), implemented by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK), has completed soil investigation. An engineer associated with the project said the design is in its final stages and will provide a much-needed link between the northern and southern stretches of the city, reducing delays caused by railway crossings and benefitting daily commuters as well as emerging commercial clusters.
Construction is also progressing at the Kumbalangi–Keltron ferry bridge site, where land-based piling has been completed and work in the backwater stretch is underway. Contractors estimate a 15-month completion window. The bridge is expected to provide a faster route to NH 66 and improve accessibility to Kumbalangi, Aroor, Kannamali and surrounding areas — all of which rely heavily on road-based mobility for employment, healthcare, and education. Work has finally restarted on the pending Munambam–Azheekode bridge after land acquisition hurdles were cleared. The 868.7-metre structure, part of the proposed Kasaragod–Thiruvananthapuram coastal highway, is projected to significantly improve movement between Ernakulam and Thrissur. Urban planners argue that improved coastal connectivity will support disaster-resilient evacuation routes and facilitate economic growth across fishing, tourism, and logistics.
Experts note that while infrastructure expansion is essential for a fast-growing urban region like Kochi, long-term mobility planning must integrate equitable access, climate-resilient engineering, and low-carbon transport modes. They point out that every new bridge should be aligned with pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly infrastructure, ensuring that mobility upgrades do not only benefit vehicle owners but all residents, especially those without private transport. If implemented with sustainability as a core principle, Kochi’s new bridge network has the potential not only to ease bottlenecks but also to make essential services more accessible, support local economies, and strengthen the city’s transition towards a more inclusive and connected urban future.
