The inspections also uncovered illegal dumping and unauthorised landfilling in the Pavana riverbed at Ravet, Kalewadi, and Pimple Gurav. Authorities have registered offences against eight landowners and three vehicle operators, collecting fines amounting to approximately ₹30 lakh for violations. Municipal Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni emphasised that the Environment Department is committed to controlling river pollution through consistent enforcement.
“PCMC’s nuisance-detection teams are conducting detailed surveys, and immediate action is being taken against polluters. Sealing of units, imposition of fines, and filing of criminal cases are integral to this initiative. We are determined to maintain the river’s ecological balance,” he stated.
Industry experts highlight that urban rivers are often subjected to contamination from small-scale industries and construction-related runoff, which not only threatens aquatic ecosystems but also affects downstream water quality. The Pavana River, a key water source and ecological asset for Pimpri Chinchwad, has faced recurrent pollution issues over the past decade. Analysts argue that sustained monitoring, combined with community awareness and strict enforcement, is essential to prevent long-term degradation.Environmental officials note that the recent drive reflects a shift toward proactive municipal governance, integrating environmental compliance into urban development strategies. Alongside enforcement, PCMC is considering public awareness campaigns to reduce local waste dumping and encourage eco-friendly industrial practices.
