The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated a large-scale effort to combat dust and vehicular pollution across the capital, with high-pressure water jets scheduled to clean stretches of Ring Road and Outer Ring Road on Saturday. The measures follow directives issued after the chief minister chaired a review meeting calling for accelerated action to address rising particulate levels and emissions in the city.
Officials explained that the exercise aims to reduce dust accumulated on carriageways and medians, which is often resuspended by traffic, especially during dry winter conditions. The PWD has also been instructed to install 305 mist-spraying systems across key city roads, with a revised completion target set for December 15. The systems, originally expected to be operational by the end of November, are designed to improve ambient air quality along busy traffic corridors. An official highlighted that during an inspection on November 30, several anti-smog guns were found non-functional. Contractors responsible for maintenance have been given a three-day window to repair and ensure proper operation, with potential payment withholding for non-compliance. Field engineers have also been asked to restore all roads excavated for utility works within seven days, ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow.
In a broader effort to promote sustainable urban infrastructure, PWD officials have been directed to coordinate with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to increase the use of recycled construction and demolition (C&D) material in road construction. The MCD flagged low procurement of such material, prompting stricter monitoring and inspection at C&D processing plants to confirm supply adherence. Further, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been tasked with listing damaged roads under its jurisdiction that contribute to dust pollution. This compilation, due within 10 days, will guide targeted restoration works, including potential tree plantation in degraded areas, supporting Delhi’s climate-resilient and zero-carbon city ambitions.
“These measures reflect a strategic shift toward integrated air quality management, combining infrastructure restoration with technological interventions to mitigate pollution,” a senior urban official said. Residents are advised to remain aware of ongoing cleaning operations and support the initiative by complying with traffic guidelines. With these interventions, Delhi aims to address winter dust challenges proactively, while reinforcing sustainable urban practices that contribute to cleaner, healthier, and more resilient streets.
