Mumbai Enables Metro 2A And 7 Ticket Booking Across Fourteen Plus Apps

Mumbai’s push towards seamless urban mobility has taken a significant step forward, with commuters on Metro Lines 2A and 7 now able to book QR-code tickets through more than a dozen popular mobile apps. The integration, enabled through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), is designed to make public transport access more flexible, convenient, and digitally inclusive for the city’s growing ridership.

The initiative follows the early traction of the Mumbai One mobility platform, which has crossed more than 3.7 lakh downloads within two months of its launch. Senior officials said expanding the mobile ticketing ecosystem across third-party apps aims to reduce queues, support contactless travel, and offer passengers a choice of familiar platforms. The widening of digital access, they added, is a key step towards building a more user-friendly and sustainable mass transit system. Ticket booking is now available across widely used applications, including Confirmtkt, EaseMyTrip, Ixigo Trains, RedBus, RedRail, Navi UPI, OneTicket, Tripozo, Tummoc, Vodafone Idea, WhatsApp (via a digital payments service provider), and Yatri Railways. Several more platforms—such as Paytm, Uber, and bike-taxi aggregators—are expected to join the ecosystem shortly, indicating a growing industry appetite for interoperable mobility services.

Officials involved in the rollout said the integration was executed through a technology partner supporting the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s broader digital infrastructure goals. The system is designed to align with national efforts under the Digital India mission, which seeks to equip public systems with scalable, open digital frameworks that enable diverse service providers to participate. According to a senior transport planner, open networks help ensure that mobility services evolve in a way that promotes equity, accessibility, and long-term sustainability. Metro Lines 2A and 7 currently carry around 3.5 lakh passengers daily, with the corridor forming a crucial north–south spine along the western suburbs. Ridership is expected to grow further as network extensions—such as Lines 2B and 9, spanning nearly 37 kilometres—move closer to completion. Expanding digital ticketing is seen as essential for managing this increasing demand while minimising congestion at station counters.

Urban mobility experts say that integrating metro ticketing with everyday digital apps reflects a shift towards multimodal travel, where users can plan and pay for journeys across various transport modes within a single digital environment. Such digital ecosystems, they note, not only improve commuter convenience but also encourage a broader shift towards public transport—an important factor in reducing emissions, lowering road congestion, and building more inclusive, low-carbon urban environments. As Mumbai prepares for further metro expansions in the coming years, the success of this digital ticketing rollout could serve as a blueprint for other Indian cities working to strengthen their public transport systems while advancing sustainability goals.
