Mumbai Prepares New AC Local Trains For WR And CR Services Soon

Mumbai’s suburban rail network is poised for a significant boost as Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) prepare to induct one new air-conditioned (AC) local train each into the city’s fleet. Currently en route from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, these additions aim to ease capacity constraints and improve commuter experience across the city’s most crowded routes.

An official from WR explained that the new Medha-design AC train, featuring an underslung configuration that houses critical electrical systems beneath the coach floor, will allow more seating and increase passenger capacity from approximately 1,028 to 1,116 per train. This design innovation provides both comfort and operational efficiency, ensuring smoother movement during peak hours. CR sources confirmed a similar train is expected to join their fleet within the next fortnight. The introduction of these trains comes as existing AC services face operational pressure. WR currently operates 109 AC services using 10 trains, while CR runs 90 services with seven trains. “Our entire AC fleet is running at full capacity, leaving minimal room for maintenance or unexpected breakdowns. This addition will provide much-needed operational flexibility,” said a senior railway official.

Beyond immediate relief, the railways are also eyeing long-term modernisation. Under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) phases 3 and 3A, a total of 238 new AC local trains with vestibule coaches will be procured at an estimated cost of ₹19,293 crore. These trains are expected to offer cushioned seating, pre-installed display systems, and improved acceleration for smoother journeys, aligning with Mumbai’s vision for a more inclusive and comfortable commuter experience. Operational challenges persist, including managing passengers without valid tickets on AC services. Authorities have initiated stricter monitoring under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with penal action possible for violators. Nevertheless, experts suggest that expanding AC services will gradually enhance compliance while improving overall travel quality.

The railways’ incremental expansion of AC locals is a key step towards modernising Mumbai’s public transport, balancing commuter comfort with operational efficiency. Officials indicate that while further AC additions are possible, priority will be given to integrating these trains effectively within existing schedules, ensuring maintenance standards are upheld without disrupting daily services. As Mumbai’s population and commuter demand continue to grow, the addition of new AC local trains represents both a practical and sustainable approach to urban mobility. Industry experts note that integrating modern, high-capacity trains can help reduce reliance on road transport, contributing to lower emissions and a greener city transport ecosystem.
