Chennai Weather Sees Patchy Rain Pleasant Temperatures While Air Quality Remains Poor

Chennai witnessed patchy rainfall and pleasant temperatures on Tuesday, offering temporary climatic relief to residents even as air quality concerns continued to loom over the city. With daytime temperatures ranging between 22°C and 28°C, high humidity levels, and steady winds, weather conditions remained largely comfortable. However, the city’s air quality stayed in the ‘poor’ category, underscoring the persistent challenge of managing urban pollution despite favourable meteorological conditions.

Morning hours across Chennai were marked by cooler and humid conditions, making it a suitable window for light outdoor activities. As the day progressed, cloud cover increased, accompanied by intermittent rain showers in parts of the city. Weather data indicated a high probability of precipitation, while wind speeds of over 25 kmph contributed to a noticeable breeze, helping moderate surface temperatures through the afternoon and evening.Humidity levels hovered above 75%, typical of Chennai’s coastal climate during this period. While light rain and wind can help disperse airborne pollutants temporarily, experts caution that such relief is often short-lived in densely populated cities. Vehicular emissions, construction activity, and regional pollution sources continue to influence air quality levels, particularly during peak traffic hours.

On Monday, Chennai recorded an Air Quality Index of 160, placing it firmly in the ‘poor’ category. Fine particulate matter remained a key concern, with PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations exceeding recommended safety thresholds. Health specialists note that exposure to such pollution levels can cause respiratory irritation and exacerbate existing conditions, especially among children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.“Short-term weather changes may reduce pollutant concentration marginally, but they do not address the root causes,” an environmental expert said. “Sustained improvements require consistent emission control measures across transport, construction, and energy use.”Residents have been advised to limit prolonged outdoor exposure during high-traffic periods and consider protective measures when commuting. Early mornings, when pollution levels are generally lower, remain the safest time for outdoor exercise.

Looking ahead, forecasts suggest Chennai will experience a largely dry and sunny week, with temperatures expected to remain below 30°C and cooler nights nearing 20°C. While this is likely to enhance thermal comfort and reduce energy demand for cooling, urban planners stress that long-term liveability depends on integrating clean mobility, improved air quality management, and climate-responsive urban design.Although recent data shows a modest improvement compared to earlier pollution peaks this month, experts emphasise that lasting progress will rely on sustained policy action rather than favourable weather alone. As Chennai continues to expand, aligning weather resilience with cleaner air remains critical to building a healthier and more inclusive urban future.
