Mumbai Metro Line 2B Stations Near Completion

Mumbai’s east–west metro expansion has taken a decisive step forward with the award of a ₹201.49 crore contract to complete architectural finishing and essential infrastructure across seven elevated stations on Metro Line 2B. The package, cleared by the metropolitan development authority, is aimed at preparing stations on the D.N. Nagar to Mandale corridor for full passenger use, signalling progress on a route expected to ease cross-city travel pressures.

According to officials, the contract focuses on station-level readiness rather than civil construction, covering interior fit-outs, external façades and the installation of core utilities such as water supply, sanitation and drainage systems. These elements are critical to making stations operational, safe and accessible, particularly in a dense urban environment where commuter experience and reliability often determine public transport uptake. The scope spans seven elevated stations, including three designated as iconic stations—ITO, ILFS and MTNL—alongside standard stations at S G Barve Marg, Kurla East, the Eastern Express Highway and Chembur. Together, these stations form a crucial stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, an east–west connector designed to link western suburbs with eastern employment and residential hubs.

The awarded value stands at ₹201.49 crore, excluding Goods and Services Tax, and was finalised at around 14 per cent below the authority’s estimated cost. Officials said this reflects competitive pricing in the tender process while remaining aligned with technical and financial requirements. The contract value accounts for all applicable duties, levies and incidental charges, apart from GST, keeping fiscal exposure transparent within the broader metro programme. The Letter of Acceptance will also function as a Notice to Proceed, allowing work to begin immediately. The execution timeline has been set at 15 months, with delivery linked to detailed specifications outlined in the tender documents. As per conditions, the contractor is required to submit performance security within 30 days, with the acceptance letter remaining binding until a formal agreement is signed.

Urban transport experts note that architectural finishing is often underestimated but plays a significant role in passenger comfort, safety and inclusivity. Well-designed interiors, accessible utilities and durable façades can improve station usability for women, elderly commuters and persons with disabilities, while also reducing long-term maintenance and energy costs. Metro Line 2B is positioned as a vital addition to Mumbai’s public transport network, supporting modal shift away from private vehicles and helping cut congestion and emissions. As cities increasingly prioritise low-carbon mobility and equitable access, timely completion of station infrastructure is seen as essential to delivering reliable, people-centric transit systems that support sustainable urban growth.
