Central Railway Will Operate Mega Block Impacting Trains On December 21

Mumbai’s suburban railway network will witness significant service disruptions on Sunday, 21 December, as Central Railway implements a planned mega block for engineering and maintenance works. The intervention aims to ensure the long-term reliability and safety of critical rail infrastructure, affecting main line, Harbour line, and Trans-Harbour line operations across the Mumbai Division. Commuters are advised to plan travel accordingly, as several trains will face diversions or partial cancellations.

The main line block will affect the 5th and 6th tracks between Thane and Kalyan stations from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. During this window, UP Mail and Express services such as the Pune–CSMT Sinhagad Express, Nagpur–CSMT Sewagram Express, and Vande Bharat Express will be rerouted along the UP Fast line, resulting in delays of 10 to 15 minutes. Similarly, DOWN Mail and Express trains, including the CSMT–Kolhapur Express and LTT–Thiruvananthapuram Netravati Express, will travel via the DOWN Fast line with expected delays of a similar duration. Harbour line services between Panvel and Vashi stations (excluding the PORT line) will be suspended from 11:05 am to 4:05 pm. UP services from Panvel to CSMT and DOWN services from CSMT to Panvel/Belapur will remain cancelled during this period. Trans-Harbour line operations will continue in a limited capacity between Thane and Vashi/Nerul stations, while PORT line services will remain operational between Belapur/Nerul and Uran. Special local trains will operate between CSMT and Vashi to alleviate commuter inconvenience.

Officials highlighted that such maintenance interventions, though disruptive, are essential to sustain the growing demands on Mumbai’s suburban rail network. “Infrastructure upkeep is critical for passenger safety and network efficiency. Planned blocks like this minimise unplanned outages in the future,” an official explained. Industry experts note that Mumbai’s suburban railways carry millions daily, making regular maintenance and modernisation efforts vital for sustainable urban mobility. Commuters are encouraged to check real-time train updates and consider alternate routes or travel timings. Civic authorities and railway planners emphasise the importance of public cooperation to ensure the smooth execution of essential works without compromising safety or operational standards. The block underscores ongoing efforts by Central Railway to enhance urban transport infrastructure in one of India’s most densely populated metropolitan regions.

While temporary inconveniences are inevitable, the maintenance and engineering interventions aim to strengthen service reliability, improve track safety, and support the region’s broader sustainable mobility goals.
