Mumbai’s suburban rail network will undergo significant operational adjustments on December 28, as Central Railway (CR) carries out a comprehensive megablock across its Main and Harbour lines to facilitate essential engineering and maintenance work. The planned works are part of the railway’s ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure, enhance safety, and improve commuter experience across the city’s high-density rail corridors.
The megablock schedule will affect multiple sections. On the Main line, fast lines between Matunga and Mulund will be closed from 11:05 am to 3:45 pm. Harbour line operations will also see disruptions: the CSMT–Chunabhatti/Bandra down harbour line will be blocked from 11:40 am to 4:40 pm, while the up harbour line from Chunabhatti/Bandra to CSMT will remain closed between 11:10 am and 4:10 pm. These adjustments are designed to allow for track repairs, signalling maintenance, and other critical operational enhancements. To minimise commuter inconvenience, CR will operate special services between Panvel and Kurla (platform No. 8) at 20-minute intervals throughout the block period. Harbour line passengers are encouraged to use alternate routes via the Main line and Western Railway between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. “The rerouting plan ensures continuity of essential travel while critical works are completed,” an official noted, highlighting the balancing act between maintenance and service provision.
Industry experts emphasise that such megablocks, though temporarily disruptive, are crucial for long-term reliability and safety.
