The South Western Railway (SWR) has extended the operation of its Bi‑weekly Express Special connecting Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) Bengaluru and Bidar to manage peak passenger demand during the post‑festival travel period. Scheduled to run until late February, the service underscores Indian Railways’ growing emphasis on flexible, demand‑responsive transport solutions to support regional mobility and economic linkages.

Under the revised plan, Train No. 06539 from SMVT Bengaluru to Bidar will operate on Fridays and Sundays, while the return service, Train No. 06540 from Bidar to SMVT Bengaluru, will run on Saturdays and Mondays. Both directions will see a total of 17 trips during this two‑month window, allowing travelers in northern Karnataka and southern Telangana to access Bengaluru’s urban centres efficiently. Rail authorities have confirmed that the train will maintain its existing timings, halts, and coach composition, signalling continuity and predictability for regular commuters.The temporary extension reflects a broader trend in Indian rail operations, where seasonal adjustments accommodate surges in passenger volumes linked to festivals, holidays, and regional events. Analysts note that such adaptive scheduling helps balance system load, reduces congestion on major trunk routes, and enhances service reliability in densely populated corridors. Non-interlocking work scheduled for early January will necessitate partial short-terminations: outbound services from Bidar on January 3 will terminate at Yelahanka, and the inbound January 4 service from Bengaluru will originate at Yelahanka, leading to partial cancellations between the city terminal and Yelahanka station. SWR officials emphasised that these operational adjustments are temporary and aimed at improving track safety and signaling efficiency in one of Bengaluru’s busiest urban rail nodes.Urban transit experts highlight that seasonal express services such as the Bengaluru–Bidar Bi‑weekly Express play a critical role in integrating tier‑II cities and rural hubs with major metropolitan areas.
