Kallakkadal Phenomenon’ Endangers Kerala, Southern Tamil Nadu

Amidst concerns over coastal safety, the entire coastal regions of Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu face the imminent threat of the ‘kallakkadal phenomenon’, characterised by sudden and violent swell of the seas leading to rough waves.

This phenomenon, known colloquially as ‘kallakkadal,’ has prompted a central agency to issue urgent alerts to fishermen and coastal residents, emphasising the need for precautionary measures and heightened vigilance. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), responsible for disseminating weather warnings to fishermen across the country, has cautioned individuals to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols. With rough seas expected to intensify, fishermen are advised to secure their vessels in harbours and maintain a safe distance between boats to mitigate the risk of collision. Furthermore, ensuring the safety of fishing equipment is emphasised to prevent damage and loss. In light of the potential dangers posed by the ‘kallakkadal phenomenon’, INCOIS has urged people to refrain from beach visits and any sea-related activities entirely. This proactive measure aims to safeguard individuals from potential hazards associated with sudden and unpredictable sea surges.

The term ‘kallakkadal’, originating from local parlance, vividly describes the swift and stealthy nature of the sea’s onslaught. INCOIS attributes the occurrence of swell surges to strong winds in the southern Indian Ocean, highlighting the sudden and unforeseeable nature of these phenomena, which often manifest without prior warning. As coastal communities brace themselves for the impact of the ‘kallakkadal phenomenon’, heightened awareness and adherence to safety directives are paramount. By heeding the alerts issued by INCOIS and local authorities, individuals can minimise risks and ensure their safety amidst the unpredictable forces of nature threatening the coastal regions of Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu.
