Chennai Metro Authority Set to Roll Out Ambitious Mobility Blueprint

Chennai’s urban landscape is poised for a transformative overhaul as the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) gears up to unveil its groundbreaking Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) by June.

This milestone initiative marks a significant stride in the city’s urban development agenda, promising to redefine transportation infrastructure and mobility patterns across the expanded Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA). The CMP, a meticulously crafted blueprint, aspires to cater comprehensively to the evolving mobility needs of Chennai’s denizens. It envisions an integrated approach to transportation planning, seamlessly blending land use dynamics with diverse transportation modalities. Unlike its predecessor drafted in 2018, the updated plan casts its ambit over an expansive territory spanning 5,904 sq km, encompassing five districts within the metropolitan fold.

Under the astute stewardship of CUMTA’s Special Officer, I Jayakumar, the authority has conducted exhaustive groundwork, including primary surveys in collaboration with pertinent agencies. Ahead of finalising the draft, CUMTA is poised to convene a preliminary meeting, soliciting inputs from key stakeholders across various departments. The CMP’s strategic vision underscores the symbiotic relationship between land use patterns and transportation systems, aligning seamlessly with the objectives outlined in the Third Master Plan. Central to its mandate is the promotion of sustainable urban mobility, with a pronounced emphasis on bolstering public transport infrastructure to alleviate reliance on private vehicles.

Furthermore, the plan advocates for the establishment of multi-modal transport hubs strategically positioned across the metropolitan expanse, mirroring the success of existing models in Tambaram, Guindy, Avadi, and Ambattur. In a concerted effort to cater to the burgeoning needs of the expanded Chennai Metropolitan Planning Area (CMPA), the CMP proposes extensions to the Metro Rail corridor, facilitating enhanced connectivity from the airport to Kilambakkam and Poonamallee to Thirumazhisai. These forward-looking initiatives, in alignment with Government Order No. 184, epitomise a proactive approach to urban planning, navigating the intricate contours of Chennai’s burgeoning urban landscape with foresight and precision.
