Hyderabad’s Urban Heat Island Hotspots Identified GHMC Research Reveals

A recent research conducted by the Hyderabad Urban Lab has shed light on the concentration of Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) in specific areas within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

According to findings presented by research intern Sabarinath, UHIs are notably clustered in the northwestern, western, southern, and southeastern regions of Hyderabad. In the northwestern quadrant, UHIs have been identified in the Patancheruvu and Bandlaguda wards, while the Gachibowli ward stands out as a hotspot in the western region. Similarly, the Mailardevpally ward in the south and BN Reddy Nagar, Hayathnagar, and Mansoorabad wards in the southeast exhibit significant concentrations of UHIs, as per the analysis of March 2024 data conducted by the research team. Urban Heat Islands refer to metropolitan areas characterised by elevated Land Surface Temperatures (LST) compared to their surrounding areas. In Hyderabad, these phenomena are primarily attributed to rapid urbanisation and anthropogenic activities, including the proliferation of densely populated urban areas devoid of adequate green spaces.

The escalation of Urban Heat Islands poses significant challenges, contributing to the overall rise in temperatures observed in Hyderabad. Notably, recent temperature records have underscored this trend, with Hyderabad registering its highest maximum temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius in Khairatabad. The implications of concentrated UHIs extend beyond mere temperature variations, impacting public health, energy consumption, and urban planning strategies. As Hyderabad grapples with the consequences of urban heat, policymakers and urban planners are urged to prioritise mitigation measures, including the implementation of green infrastructure, heat-resilient urban design, and community-driven initiatives aimed at enhancing urban liveability and climate resilience. The findings of the GHMC research serve as a critical resource for informed decision-making, guiding efforts to address the challenges posed by Urban Heat Islands and foster sustainable urban development in Hyderabad. By adopting a holistic approach that integrates scientific insights, policy interventions, and community engagement, the city can effectively navigate the complexities of urban heat and chart a path towards a more climate-resilient future.
