Transforming Transit Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway Upgrade Unveiled

Major relief for commuters between Bengaluru and Mumbai, a new 72-kilometre stretch of six-lane highway between Chitradurga and Davangere in Karnataka is poised to revolutionise connectivity and minimise travel time.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, took to social media to share images of the newly constructed section, branding it a “lifeline” linking the financial capital to the tech hub. Gadkari emphasised that the new highway route is not only expected to save time but also promote fuel efficiency and eco-friendly travel practices. This strategic infrastructure investment underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation networks while prioritising sustainability.

“Traverse the breathtaking vistas along the 6-lane Chitradurga-Davangere stretch, a lifeline linking Bangalore and Mumbai. This route isn’t just about reaching destinations; it’s a symphony of time-saving, fuel-efficient, and eco-friendly travel, weaving through Karnataka’s natural splendour,” Gadkari wrote on X.

With an estimated construction cost of nearly Rs 1400 crores, the project demonstrates a proactive approach to reducing future maintenance expenses. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) plans to utilise sustainable techniques and materials, including incorporating plastic in bituminous concrete and milling material in service roads, to ensure long-term durability and cost-effectiveness. This initiative complements previous announcements regarding the construction of a highway between Nelamangala and Devihalli in Karnataka, which forms part of National Highway 75. Beyond merely cutting down travel time between Mumbai and Bengaluru, the new highway is expected to stimulate growth in the real estate markets of Chitradurga and Davangere, as well as other regions of North West Karnataka, due to improved connectivity and accessibility.

The unveiling of the new six-lane highway marks a significant milestone in the transportation infrastructure of Bengaluru and Mumbai, promising enhanced efficiency and connectivity. As India continues to prioritise infrastructure development, initiatives like these are instrumental in driving economic growth, fostering regional development, and improving the overall quality of life for citizens.
