CMDA Unveils Blueprint for Chennai’s Satellite Towns Tourism and Economic Growth in Focus

The Chennai Metropolitan Area’s (CMA) landscape, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has unveiled ambitious plans for six satellite townships.

With a focus on fostering economic growth and enhancing tourism potential, CMDA’s comprehensive framework aims to capitalise on the region’s diverse strengths. Among the standout developments, Thirumazhisai township emerges as a pivotal centre, leveraging its existing industrial cluster and robust connectivity to drive economic prosperity. Notably, with the impending completion of the Kuthambakkam bus terminus, the township promises to catalyse further development, complemented by its proximity to the Chembarambakkam lake and abundant green spaces. “The plan is to promote it as a research and development (R&D) zone. The town will have a segregation of industrial and innovation parks, housing new start-ups, as also residential and commercial spaces,” he said.

Furthermore, CMDA’s vision extends to Mamallapuram, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, recognising their rich cultural heritage and significant tourism potential. These towns are earmarked for transformation into vibrant tourist hubs, capitalising on their historical significance and strategic locations. Underpinning these initiatives are meticulous planning and execution strategies, encapsulated in CMDA’s New Town Development Plan. By delineating common facilities, transit-oriented developments, and heritage conservation plans, CMDA aims to ensure coherence and sustainability across all satellite townships. Moreover, CMDA’s proactive approach extends to regulatory compliance, with mandates for widespread dissemination of Government Orders (G.O.s) to over 100 governmental departments and autonomous bodies. This ensures comprehensive engagement and alignment with diverse stakeholders throughout the development process. As CMDA forges ahead with its ambitious agenda, Chennai’s satellite towns stand poised for a transformative journey, promising economic dynamism and cultural resurgence on a grand scale.
