Delhi Municipality’s Proactive Measures Combat Pollution Surge

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has embarked on a comprehensive strategy aimed at mitigating environmental degradation.

Through a multifaceted approach, the municipality is implementing a series of measures designed to combat pollution levels across the national capital. A primary focus of the MCD’s initiative is the proactive management of dust pollution originating from roads and open areas. This includes the installation of interlocking pave blocks at key parking sites and the undertaking of maintenance activities to repair unpaved and broken roads. By deploying 52 Mechanical Road Sweepers (MRS) and 225 water sprinklers, including 28 mobile anti-smog guns (ASGs), the MCD aims to suppress dust particles effectively.

Furthermore, the MCD is addressing the challenge of construction and demolition (C&D) waste through strategic interventions. By identifying and operationalising 68 key waste collection points and curbing illegal dumping practices, the municipality seeks to streamline waste management processes and promote responsible disposal practices among citizens. “There is a special emphasis on optimising the use of mechanised road sweeping machines, implementing effective manual road sweeping, and utilising water sprinklers to suppress dust particles,” the civic body said in a statement on Thursday.

The Horticulture Department of MCD has also joined the effort by undertaking extensive greening initiatives across open areas, gardens, and municipal buildings. Through the plantation of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and climbers, the municipality aims to enhance greenery and control road dust effectively. Noteworthy achievements include the planting of 1,22,884 trees and 3,10,710 shrubs within the MCD’s jurisdiction from April 2023 to February 2024, significantly contributing to the reduction of air pollution levels. Regular monitoring and implementation of advisories issued by relevant authorities underscore the MCD’s commitment to combatting pollution effectively.
