NHAI’s Speed Breaker Removal Sparks Safety Concerns on NH-16

The recent move by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to dismantle speed bumps along the service road of NH-16 near Utkal University and Rasulgarh Square has ignited a contentious debate among commuters and road safety experts alike.

While some commuters have applauded the decision, citing smoother travel experiences, others express concerns about heightened accident risks resulting from the absence of speed breakers in these crucial areas. Road safety experts emphasise the need for alternative safety measures, suggesting the installation of reflective markers to alert drivers about potential hazards on the road. Ensuring the safety of commuters, particularly in areas where speed breakers have been removed, remains paramount. The removal of the speed reducer near Utkal University’s main gate, initially installed to deter wrong-side driving, has raised concerns among experts. They advocate for additional measures to curb this dangerous practice and uphold road safety standards. Similarly, the removal of rumblers near Rasulgarh Square’s exit leading to Mancheswar has drawn attention. These rumblers played a vital role in managing traffic flow from the roundabout, reducing the risk of collisions at this busy intersection.

NHAI’s decision reflects a broader strategy aimed at optimising traffic flow and enhancing road infrastructure efficiency. However, the repercussions of speed breaker removals on road safety cannot be overlooked, prompting stakeholders to engage in discussions to find viable solutions. “With the removal of these rumblers, there is a need for alternative safety measures to manage traffic effectively and reduce the chances of accidents. Accidents are a frequent affair at this particular junction,” said Rasulgarh resident Himanshu Nayak.

Meanwhile, the NHAI officials said the decision to remove these speed reducers is part of their efforts to improve the flow of traffic on the service roads of NH-16. “The decision has been taken in consultation with the local authorities,” project director (NHAI) K. Nageswara Rao said. As debates continue, stakeholders stress the importance of balancing traffic management objectives with the paramount need for road safety. Collaborative efforts between NHAI, commuters, and safety experts are essential to address concerns and ensure safe travel experiences on NH-16 and beyond.
